Beautiful dress I love ur dress. God, I know this is such a first world problem. I'm the breadwinner for my relationship, and I make less than teachers do in my city, though I get decent benefits. My fiancee is in my same department but has been unable to get full time. This is a major and common complaint in my department. We've been engaged for over a year, and tried to save, but life's emergencies wiped us out. Health issues, one of our cats needing a major treatment, car troubles, etc. You know how it goes. My parents have offered to help, but they're older and either retired or doing so this year, and they're supporting my brother during his divorce. What they were putting aside for me had to go to him- of course, I got it, that's absolutely more important. They also haven't saved much for themselves, and have been relying on the stock market- see how well that's going. I can't take from their security. I'm just... fucking bummed. I'm a realist who wishes she could be an idealist, but I refuse to go into major debt for what essentially is a one-day party. Weddings are such a racket and can be insanely expensive, and the marriage is what's important, not the wedding. I know that. I didn't even want anything really fancy or expensive- just a small, intimate 20 minute hand-fasting ceremony, followed by a reception dinner with soup and bread and baked chicken. Simple, old-world feel. No wedding party or a dj and dance floor or wedding games. Just a few hours for 50 friends and family to mingle, play board and card games, probably drink too much wine, and just enjoy. But we were on a date last night, and both recognized the reality of the fact that it's not possible. I've known it for a while, but to finally verbalize it... It sucks. He feels awful because he hasn't been able to get full time work. I make enough to support us, but only that. We'll probably have a small JoP wedding and then dinner out with our respective parents, I guess. Just a note because I also got married last year and I did my best to have a budget wedding. Sometimes it's just not going to be possible to have a beautiful wedding like this without spending a lot more money. We don't have any friends who have wedding venues, who are wedding photographers, who are florists, who do rentals, etc. I planned the entire wedding myself and loved it but I had to pay full price for everything unfortunately because that's life. The venue/catering is usually the biggest cost by far (usually the venue has caterers that you have to use) so that by itself was extremely expensive. The only thing I did have was a friend who makes cakes, and I got a huge discount on the cake (but I only saved like 300 on that. We had a lot more guests than Marah had because our parents are very traditional and needed to invite all the people they know, but that was okay because they helped us out with the costs. We skipped the open bar but had wine bottles and champagne flutes at the tables. We're lucky that we found a venue we loved that allowed us to bring our own drinks and desserts, most don't (with the exception of the cake of course. Just keep in mind for people who are hoping for a beautiful wedding but want to spend under 10K, it might not be possible if you don't know somebody that can rent you a venue and furniture for super cheap, unfortunately.
